Read through the list of research topics (located in the Appendix), or by clicking the link here, on which to write a research paper. Select three (3) topics that interest you most and identify two (2) credible sources for each topic. Note: This is one (1) of several parts that will build toward a final draft of your persuasive writing research paper.

Write a one to two (1-2) page paper in which you:

1. Explain the reason for selecting topic one, identify the audience, and provide a preliminary thesis statement.
2. Explain the reason for selecting topic two (2), identify the audience, and provide a preliminary thesis statement.
3. Explain the reason for selecting topic three (3), identify the audience, and provide a preliminary thesis statement.
4. Identify and document six (6) credible sources (two (2) for each topic) that you would expect to use. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting guidelines:

• Imagine you are explaining to a friend what the term species means. In your own words define the term species then provide three (3) examples of different species. Next determine three (3) ways that species within a genus are often related to one another. Furthermore, in your response briefly describe how the word “related” is being used when discussing species and genus.

Discussion 2 “Mitochondria, Water, Molecules, and Cell Structures”

• Consider three (3) structures and functions of a cell then provide a 100 to 250 word explanation based on the following question: “How do varied membrane composition and the structural features of molecules in different cells contribute to membrane function?”

Discussion 3 “Energy Sources and Energy for Life”

 

Discuss three types of energy sources used by cells then provide two examples of situations your chosen energy sources are used. Next describe two (2) forms of transport within the cell and the specific energy source used in each form of transport.

 

1.  In a paragraph or two, provide an example of what you believe to be an example of “biased news” or “biased news reporting” (on a matter of your choice).  Explain why you believe it to be “biased” and, if you can, provide a specific source for supporting or refuting your position (as to its biased or unbiased nature).  Remember that this is due via “hard copy” to the instructor by the due date.

In economics, they say a picture is worth a thousand words. Below, you will find two scenarios. Your assignment is to discuss the situation by writing the solutions, and then show the solutions and how you got here in one or more graphs or flowcharts.

Scenario One

Supply and demand are foundational concepts in understanding economic theory. Whether you are a coffee drinker or not, you have been tasked to examine the impact of supply and demand when dealing with the coffee retail industry. A few companies probably come to mind. Pick a major coffee retailer, and then contemplate what has been happening to both the supply and demand for this product.

Next, analyze the following scenario that deals with what happened in the coffee industry at the beginning of the last decade:

In the early part of the last decade, there was an overproduction of coffee. The price dropped so low that producers’ costs were higher than the market price. The reason this happened was that market prices became high before this, and the supply of coffee increased substantially. In the meantime, demand for coffee and everything else remained the same.

Coffee prices, as a supply input, went down. In the meantime, gourmet coffee houses began appearing, which began charging a premium for coffee in the period of decreasing prices. Gourmet coffee houses tend to open in high-rent areas and cater to higher income consumers. Because of the change they created for taste and preferences and the higher income market, the gourmet coffee houses had a win-win in a period of falling wholesale prices and increasing retail prices.

• Explain the changes in the supply and demand creating a supply and demand curve based on the above information.
  • In this graph, be sure to demonstrate how these changes affected the price and quantity levels of supply and demand.
• Based on this analysis, how were coffee retailers faring in the marketplace?

Scenario Two

In this next scenario, start your discussion by examining the differences between the definitions of the macroeconomics and microeconomics. Next, discuss how the concepts of supply and demand relate to (1) microeconomics and (2) macroeconomics.

For you to demonstrate understanding of supply and demand from the perspective of microeconomics versus macroeconomics, pick 2 of the 10 scenarios below and discuss the following questions:

• Is the scenario a macroeconomic or microeconomic example of supply and demand?
• Is this impacting supply or demand?
• Is this example going to experience a shift or a movement of supply or demand?
• As a result of this change, what happened to equilibrium price and quantity?

The 10 examples for you to consider are as follows:

1. After Hurricane Katrina, what happened to the price of fish?
2. After the development of the microchip, what happened to the price of computers?
3. After the government raised tariffs on imported cheese, what happened to the price of domestic cheese?
4. Polyester suits have become trendy again. What happens to their price?
5. Internet auction sites are becoming more popular, and people are using them more and more.
6. A new health report came out that said red wine lowers cholesterol.
7. The government raises taxes.
8. Inflation increases.
9. Immigration laws are relaxed.
10. The government increases spending.

We can all agree that Martin Luther King, Jr. was a great leader. His “letter” allows us to look at the many ways he used to demonstrate his leadership and the thoughts he had during his time in the civil rights movement in Birmingham, one of the most segregated cities in the U.S.
In this letter, we will see leadership in multiple levels. Many characteristics of leadership are apparent. As you do this assignment, keep in mind the leadership theories we are studying in this course and use them to support your answers.

In a six page paper (double spaced, Times Roman, 12 point font);
List at least three excerpts from the “letter” that deal directly with the issue of leadership and King’s leadership style.
Describe the context of the times in which the letter was written. How might that context have influenced the “letter” itself?
Why did members of the southern clergy challenge the leadership of Martin Luther King?
Why does King clearly explain the tactics of a non-violent campaign in this “letter”?
Why does King, in effect, threaten his readers regarding the possible psychological effects of racial segregation?
Is the letter an example of effective communication between a leader and followers? Support your answer.

Conducting a Competitor Analysis

• Examine three barriers that you believe represent the most significant obstacles to an effective competitor analysis. Propose a strategy to overcome each of the three barriers that you have identified.
• From the e-Activity, analyze Michael Porter’s technique for a competitive analysis. Determine one factor for each of Porter’s five forces of an environmental analysis that apply to the organization that you selected.

te a three to four (3-4) page research paper in which you:

1. Assess the positive and negative effects that peace and war, respectively, have on the distribution of foreign aid in the developing country that you have selected. Support your response with concrete examples of each of the results that you have cited.
2. Analyze the specific actions that the leadership of the selected country has taken, through the use of its foreign aid from donor nations and international lending institutions, to relieve the severe problems caused by warfare.
3. Discuss whether or not the extension of foreign aid has successfully reduced poverty and the incidence of warfare in the selected country. Support your response with examples.
