Midterm Exam Questions :

According to the authors of the book, ISIS: The State of Terror, the U.S. should pursue a carefully calibrated response to ISIS. Nevertheless, some in the U.S. and other countries argue that the Obama strategy for dealing with ISIS is too timid and not focused on destroying the organization and the threat it poses as fast as possible. Others argue that a plan based on removing ISIS without creating a vacuum in Syria is the right strategy.
Question (2 parts):
1- Comment on whether those favoring a quick overwhelming strike against ISIS is the best approach to the growing dangers posed by ISIS or whether a deliberate approach to destroying ISIS in steps is the best strategy. Also comment of what additional steps you believe the international community should take to defeat ISIS in order to make Syria and Iraq stable and unified countries free from foreign interference and control.

2- Comment on what the book, Islamic State: The Digital Caliphate, describes as ISIS domination of social media to spread its message to vulnerable populations and how that domination represents a threat to countries in the Middle East, Europe and beyond.

This week\’s readings are from the 1800s, authored either by leading advocates for women\’s rights (Elizabeth Cady Stanton/Declaration of Sentiments) or opponents of women\’s suffrage (Francis Parkman). While it is often difficult to place oneself in a different time period, and understand how so many individuals believed things we find so ludicrous today, (and these are just short pieces of documents from this time period), if you can, try to take a few moments to think about what life would have been like for you – as a man or woman. Given the constraints of everyday life, would you be able to/still have a passion for being an advocate for women\’s rights, or would it be easier to continue on with the practices, beliefs, and ideas of the day? This is a question that I don\’t think any of us could really answer, but it may be useful as a way to understand some of these things that seem so foreign to us today.
1.The women\’s movement in the US has always fought for legal and social change. What are some examples of these legal and social changes being sought by the women\’s movement in the mid-1800s? Which do you think has a more powerful effect in terms of promoting women\’s rights?
2.What were the some of the arguments against women\’s suffrage? Which argument, in your opinion, would be the most difficult to overcome for suffragists?
3.How does examination of the history of the women\’s movement help us to understand women\’s place in politics and society today? Or is not an effective method to understand women\’s place in politics today?

Remember to add as much proof for each item/topic as your audience will need solid support from you in the end for any recommendations you might offer. Push your thoughts forward a bit into \”what if\” your SWOT\’s resultant action plan doesn\’t turn out the way you thought, and what will you incorporate into the plan.
