In this essay, you will explore your emerging understanding of Self, Other, Nature, or God in relation to your emerging understanding of one or more literary elements (e.g., irony, metaphor – see list of these elements posted in our Bb) as animated in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Your analysis of the relationship between the writer’s use of literary elements and your understanding of Self, Other, Nature, or God must include the following:

• A well-crafted thesis statement, linking a literary element(s) with your focus on Self, Other, Nature, or God situated in an engaging introduction. This statement MUST be highlighted when you turn it in.

• Inclusion of your definition of Self, Other, Nature, or God.

• Inclusion of evidence of your chosen literary elements (e.g., culled quotes) from Hamlet to support, nuance, and/ or challenge the claim you make in your thesis.

• Inclusion of at least 3 academic sources to support your thesis. These sources are to be academic sources such as those you explored when preparing for your Video Critique of Whitman. One of the best places to start is with the Discovery service on the Blume library page.

In your final project, you will demonstrate the linguistic analysis skills and your
theoretical understanding of anthropological approaches to gender and sexuality through the analysis of a piece of linguistic data. There are many different approaches one can take to this project: make sure you pick the one that makes the most sense for you.
First, choose a piece of data to analyze. You may choose to continue working on the data you used in Analytic Activities 2 or 3. Or, you may decide that you’d rather collect new data. You might have seen a TV episode that seemed to be really interesting in terms of language and gender. New data or old data are both fine! If you want to dig a bit deeper into work you’re already familiar with, take your data from Activity 2 or 3. (Note that if you choose to use your data from one of the previous activities, I will expect you to have addressed any comments or suggestions I made in the feedback. Not addressing feedback in your reworking of this data will negatively impact your grade). If you’re feeling excited to explore something new, find a different piece of data! (As always, make sure to properly transcribe data if it’s audio-visual).
Next, analyze your data using whatever framework you prefer. Remember, of
course, to pay special attention to language. How is gender being
accomplished/performed/index in your data through words, sounds, or
conversation? How do you know? Support your argumentation by citing articles or books you’ve read in this course. (You are also welcome to search for additional literature, so long as it speaks in some way to the themes of this class. Let me know if you’d like help with this). You are expected to cite at least three scholarly/academic sources. Please speak with me immediately if you have any doubts about what constitutes a scholarly/academic source.

(1) Identify an organization that is ISO 14001 certified. Please follow the instructions to construct a refractometer and answer the corresponding questions.
Once you have assembled your spectrometer with the instructions in the lecture and above, use it to examine the spectra of three different light sources. Make sure that at least one of them is the sun or moon, but the others can be incandescent lights, compact fluorescent bulbs, LED lights, halogen or xenon bulbs, televisions, computer screens, candles, fireplaces, etc.
Then, answer the following questions in a separate document:
1. Describe the differences in appearance among the three spectra.
2. What feature of the light source do the spectra represent? In other words, what is it that you are actually analyzing?
3. Why do you think spectrometers are so valuable for studying celestial objects?
Part 2: Estimating the Number of Visible Stars in the Night Sky
For this, you will need an empty toilet roll and a clear, dark night. Before you start, jot down the number of stars that you think you can see in the night sky.
Aim your toilet roll at a part of the sky well above the horizon to avoid any haze pollution. Hold your roll steady and allow your eyes to get used to the light for a few seconds. Count the number of stars that you can see within through the roll. Do this four more times in other parts of the sky, and average the five counts.
The viewing diameter of a toilet roll is about 1/135th of the entire sky, at least for a relatively flat area. Mountains, buildings or large trees will obscure some of the sky. To determine the number of visible stars, multiply your average by 135.
