The Discussion Board (DB) is part of the core of online learning. Classroom discussion in an online environment requires the active participation of students and the instructor to create robust interaction and dialogue. Every student is expected to create an original response to the open-ended DB question as well as engage in dialogue by responding to posts created by others throughout the week. At the end of each unit, DB participation will be assessed based on both level of engagement and the quality of the contribution to the discussion.At a minimum, each student will be expected to post an original and thoughtful response to the DB question and contribute to the weekly dialogue by responding to at least two other posts from students. The first contribution must be posted before midnight (Central Time) on Wednesday of each week. Two additional responses are required after Wednesday of each week. Voting on whether or not to make a new law is direct democracy.   History of Propositions: The system of direct democracy in California started in the early 1900s, when many Californians were unhappy with their state’s government. Wealthy railroad owners controlled the governor and other state officials. The officials made laws to help businesses instead of the people they represented. In 1911, citizens in California changed the state constitution so that voters could help make laws. They created a system of initiatives and referendums. An initiative is a proposal for a new law. If enough citizens sign a petition, or written request, these proposals become propositions and they are added to a ballot. Citizens vote on whether they want propositions to become laws. Another form of direct democracy in California is the referendum. A referendum allows citizens to vote for or against a law that the state assembly has passed. Any California citizen can write a petition to propose a new law. If enough people sign the petition, the government must put the proposition on the ballot and let citizens vote. If enough people vote for the proposition, it becomes a law in the same way the legislature creates new laws. Currently, it takes more than 900,000 signatures to bring an initiative or a referendum before the voters. That is a tough obstacle to overcome. Even so, the number of these propositions has soared in recent years. Too Many Questions? Some people think there are too many initiatives and referendums in California today. To make good decisions, voters need to learn about each issue. This can be hard when there are so many initiatives on the ballot. “Democracy in California is on overload,” said the Fresno Bee newspaper. Many voters like direct democracy, however. Elizabeth Garrett, a law professor at the University of Southern California, says the voters feel better about laws that they pass themselves. Topic:

Ryanair, headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, was the first of the European budget airlines, being modelled on the US carrier Southwest Airlines, and has enjoyed tremendous success under its current CEO, Michael O’Leary. It has kept to the short haul sector of the European market since its deregulation in 1997, with limited routes to North Africa, and with its low cost business model has created a sector for other competitors to enter. In October 2006, as part of a strategic review, Ryanair launched a bid for Aer Lingus, another Irish airline. However, industry regulation kept them from succeeding, although they retained their share until Aer Lingus was taken over by IAG in 2015.
Whilst the sector has become more competitive, Ryanair has continued to generate profits, more recently through a more focussed approach to customer service and extending into the business traveller sector. However, a strategy of market penetration has its limits, and Ryanair may need to secure new revenue streams for the future.
Using the associated case study, you are invited to assess whether their strategy in the short haul sector is sustainable, and where future growth may come from.

FINAL PAPER. PHILOSOPHY 101.

Yu Tsun, a Chinese professor of English literature, resides in England during World War I. He is secretly a German spy. Expecting to be captured and killed, he resolves to transmit to Berlin a crucial piece of intelligence. To do this, he must first murder a stranger, an innocent civilian named Albert.

At this point in Borges’ story, there occurs an amazing coincidence. Albert turns out to be a specialist in Chinese culture. He loves the same things Yu Tsun loves. Further, Albert has devoted many years to studying Yu Tsun’s great ancestor, Tsui Pen. He has discovered Tsui Pen’s secret, which involves the identity of a novel and and a labyrinth.

Your paper will be devoted to concidence. There were millions of people in England at that time but — by coincidence — the one Yu Tsun must kill is the only person alive who could disclose Tsui Pen’s secret: the secret of the Ancestor. Your paper will be divided into three parts. Begin each part with the title in capitals below. Feel free to introduce your own ideas about “coincidence,” with examples from your experience or that of friends.

PART ONE. COINCIDENCE IN “THE GARDEN OF FORKING PATHS”

Do you think “amazing coincidences” like the one in our story ever really happen? Suppose they do. How might the story help us explain them? What sort of universe would they occur in? Read the story carefully and look for clues. You may (but need not) consider the lines about “everything happening now… to me”; about time and its forking paths (Tsui Pen’s philosophy); about “the riddle whose answer is chess.” Other bits of the story might also shed light on the question. Choose and focus as you like.

PART TWO. PLATO

How might Plato help us understand “amazing coincidence.” You may (but need not) consider the discussion of nous, “Mind” or “Intelligence,” in the 6th argument of the Phaedo, as well as patterns in Socrates’ life.

PART THREE. DESCARTES

How might Descartes’ Meditations help us understand “amazing coincidences”? If you like, suppose the final truth — the highest, most ultimate truth — is to be found in the first Meditation, or in the second, or in the third.

You have a two-fold aim. I would welcome insight into “coincidence.” I would also welcome insights into Borges, Plato, and Descartes. (If you wish, you may substitute for Descartes another philosopher we have studied, or will study, this semester— Augustine, Al-Ghazali, Nietzsche, Camus, etc.)

Write clearly. You may consult with others about writing issues, but please do you own thinking. Footnote secondary sources, if you wish to use them (you don’t need to). BE SURE TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS ABOVE; DON’T SLIP INTO MERE SUMMARIES OF THE MATERIAL.

Your paper should be roughly three pages.

In this assignment, your group will develop a presentation to be given to the project sponsor. The presentation will be developed and presented by each individual in the group; however, it must have a consistent look and feel. The group will need to work together to define the project’s parameters because the plan’s components relate to one another, and the members will need to work together to ensure that there is no redundancy or gaps in the presentation. The information must flow together as if one project manager created all of it.

Discuss and come to a consensus on the scope of the project, including the major deliverables and the items that are not part of the scope. Using your knowledge of a packaged system upgrade, describe the interim deliverables that will be created as part of the development process. Discuss how the scope will be approved and how changes to the scope will be documented, reviewed, and approved. Use the Small Group Discussion Board.

Project Human Resource (to be developed by individual)
Describe the roles and responsibilities that need to be filled on the project. Give a rationale for the staff for the project, assign roles, and describe staff involvement with each major deliverable. Decide if you will use vendors to supplement the team, and ascertain their roles and responsibilities as well as your rationale for making the decision. Describe how staffing changes will be identified, escalated, and resolved.

Use a work breakdown structure or similar tool to explain the major activities that will be completed as part of the project. Describe the major milestones for the project. Describe the system that will be used throughout the project for recording and sharing project information related to schedule, budget, utilization, and status components. Furthermore, just recently many countries united together to discuss the environmental issues the world faces. Air pollution in San Antonio is an enormous issue as it registers the 2nd worst air quality in the entire state of Texas. In comparison, Houston fairs slightly better than San Antonio and Dallas leads for the worst air quality in the state. Ron Nirenberg, who represents the city of San Antonio with the Alamo Area Council of Governments Air Improvement Resources committee mentions. “San Antonio must act as soon as possible to reduce air pollution.” Nirenberg also mentions, “I’m a little frustrated that the city took two years to craft a plan and is now teetering on noncompliance with federal air quality standards.” San Antonio has been listed in violation for ozone by the EPA. Liza Meyer, specials projects manager with the city’s Office of Sustainability says, “It’s time to move. I think the sense of urgency is here now.” Their plan is to reduce the amount of vehicles on roadways by at least 33,000. Another part of the plan is to fine motorists who leave their vehicles idle. Dallas and several other Texas communities have enabled cities to cite vehicles, particularly large trucks that are running idle for more than five minutes per hour with fines ranging from $500 to $2,000. These are small steps that cities are taking to reduce emissions and the other pollutant footprints. The city estimates that at least 150 tons of nitrogen oxides would be eliminated, which is the equivalent of 14,000 vehicles. This is a very feasible method of reducing air pollution, but I feel that more needs to be done. More regulations have to be put into place, cities that do not meet these standards should be penalized with grant restrictions to induce them to be more responsible. Air quality control is a must. Without a healthy air supply many different health issues could arise putting many people at risk. If we continue to grow our city, we must do so responsibly, within the standards of the EPA and TCEQ. We should lead all cities in air quality control, so that other cities and states follow our example.I agree with both Liza Meyers and Ron Nirenberg, it is time to change the direction in which San Antonio tackles environmental issues. Tougher regulation should be imposed by the state and federal level. We must discourage any type of neglect to our environment and our community. The future of tomorrow relies heavily on the decisions we make today. Improving air quality standards will definitely slow the catastrophic effects of global warming. Without the global effort in cutting edge technology which enables us to progress with a more sustainable and forward thinking approach we would be hopeless in solving many decades of pollution. As future engineers we must continue to push the envelop in creating more sustainable mechanisms for delivering better quality air, soil, and water to all global communities.

But we, the US, also make an effort to try and reduce our contribution to pollution. In the US regulation of air emissions and industries clash, too much regulation affects the economy of these industries negatively but at the same time regulation helps improve public health. Health and economics are usually completely separate from each other but a scientist from Carnegie Mellon University, named Paulina , did a study over whether a dollar amount could be placed on the savings created by improved air quality. Apparently there is a statistical indicator called the the “value of a statistical life,” or VSL, that basically estimates how much society is willing to spend on saving one life. According to the government on average it is around $6 million right now. The VSL indicator is a major part of the cost of air pollution to society, in the study  took data from the effects of air pollution on crops, forests and human health. The cost of air pollution found in this data is mostly due to the VSL. The reduction of air pollution has led to a decrease in the annual cost of air pollution of 25%, to $130 billion, which to me still seems like a lot. This decrease was mostly due to two factors, the incorporation of new regulations and, surprisingly, the recent Recession, which led to less demand of energy and higher use of cleaner sources like natural gas. ” Reducing these emissions reduced health impacts. These models cannot pinpoint who specifically benefited, but on a population basis there are benefits,” says .  The models can’t show who these people who have benefited are, but according the article others can. Emergency room doctors are an example given in the article. A physician named  from Pittsburgh says although people often come in with colds or allergic reactions, there are underlying factors which include air pollution. Studies have also found that ER visits for heart and lung conditions are highest on days that air pollution is higher. ER visits usually cost around $1000 and the reduction of air pollution eliminates, to some extent, the effect that air pollution has on peoples’ health conditions. Air pollution is a problem and will continue to be a problem in many different things, the most obvious is the environment and people’s health. I had never considered pollution could have anything to do with the economy and that there was an actual value to the life of an individual.  In recent years 200 coal-powered power plants have been shut down which has led to this reduction of emissions and the data collected after these shut downs has shown and reinforced the improvement of public health and lowered the overall cost of society. These results have led  to a very simple conclusion that I agree with completely, ” We need to continue regulating these emissions and putting controls on these emissions.”

 Remember the movie we watched, “Dear Zachary: A Letter About a Father to His Son”. Discuss the problems presented in the way the system handles child welfare. What needs to change, and how should we go about changing the laws regarding children?  Look at how the media affects our perception of the world or ourselves. Either talk about how the media affects our perception of beauty and our own self-image, and whether this is good or bad for young people, OR write a paper about how the media is affecting the mental development and overall well-being of children.  Look at ‘The Gettysburg Address’ again, and then at Martin Luther King Jr’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. How was the former an inspiration for the latter? Both speeches talk about the fact that although our country was created with the idea of freedom and equality, there have been times in history where these things have not been carried out fully. Compare these speeches with any newspaper articles on either ‘immigration issues’ or ‘gay marriage’ and the lack of equal rights to certain groups of people today. Find some information on the recent Ebola outbreak in Africa. Should the rest of the world have done more to help the initial outbreak, before it was able to spread out of Africa? What can we do in the future to prevent the worldwide spread of diseases?   Look at some of the recent cases of women leaving children alone (the homeless woman who left her child in the car while she did a job interview; the woman who let her child play at the park while she worked). Have our views on parenting changed in the last decade or more? Where is the line that we draw on this?  Discuss the minimum wage. California has raised theirs to $15 per hour. Some people think this is damaging to the economy, and others think it is necessary for the benefit of workers. Should the minimum wage be raised? Should it be raised this high?  Should the US and other western nations take in refugees from Syria? Why or why not?
