In the New York Times opinion piece, “Stop Googling, Let’s Talk,” MIT Professor Sherry Turkle asserts that our use of smart phones is decreasing the quality and quantity of our face-to-face conversations. She quotes a college student who explains, “Our texts are fine, it’s what texting does to our conversations when we’re together that’s the problem.” Turkle warns that the loss of face-to-face conversations results in many side effects including the erosion of our capacity for empathy and self-reflection.

To what degree do you agree with one, some, or all of Turkle’s claims about the negative impact of smart phone use? As you read her opinion piece and the articles posted by the class, develop a thesis in which you make a reasonable, arguable claim about the impact of smart phones on our ability to connect with each other. Support your claim with logic and evidence. Your evidence may include personal experience, observation and research from relevant articles.
