This case focuses on strategic reasoning.The SEC charged Midisoft Corporation with overstating revenue in the amount of $458,000. The overstatement occurred because the company recorded sales for products that had been shipped but, at the time of shipment, the company had no reasonable expectation that they would he paid for the products. In the end, the company accepted most of the shipped product as sales returns.Apparently, Midisoft’s distribution agreements allowed the distributor the opportunity to return product to Midisoft for credit whenever the distributor believed the product was unable to he sold. In FY1994, the accounting personnel submitted a proposed allowance for future returns that was too low given the returns Midisoft received in early 1995. Furthermore, management knew the exact amount of returns affecting FY 1994 prior to the time when the independent auditors finished their 1994 audit. If Midisoft had accurately revised the allowance for sales returns, the amount of net revenue reported for FY 1994 would have been significantly reduced. Instead, management devised schemes to conceal the true amount of the returns, including preventing the auditors from examining the location where the returned goods were stored. Additionally, accounting personnel altered computer records to support a reduced level of returns.Imagine that you are the independent auditor of Midisoft. The audit plan specifies specific testing procedures to assess the fair representation of the “Sales and Allowances” and “Accounts Receivable” accounts. What do you think will have to happen in order for popular black female media figures to represent what Cartier calls a “wider spectrum”? What would that “wider spectrum” of possible black female representations look like?

4. Does Gray’s essay from the late 1980s still ring true for you today? Why or why not — or, which parts of his essay still seem like accurate descriptions of media representations of African Americans today, and which seem outdated?

5. What’s an example of a TV show in which a black male actor gets to play a “man” (his character adheres to well-known codes of masculine conduct, making the character stable and legible) while a black female actor plays a character who is a cipher? Do you think that, with the rise of African American woman-led series such as Empire and Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder (among others), that this distinction no longer holds? Today, are African American female characters on TV more legible and defined, and African American male characters on TV more like ciphers?

Law enforcement agencies are a very attractive target when it comes to litigation. Thus, civil liability is a concern in American policing and will continue to be. Often, civil lawsuits against police are filed when they abuse their power, are negligent, or violate the civil rights of a citizen. Police officers and administrators understand the possibility of litigation. However, the circumstances where they will be held liable are not always clear. For this reason, police administrators need to understand the law and how police practices can potentially lead to litigation. Their goal is to minimize the risk of lawsuits in their department because the costs of liability in policing can be astronomical.You are the new police chief of a large city. The police department in your city has several complaints filed in the past year with Internal Affairs about certain police practices that some of the complaints allege police corruption.
