Blog Task 3: The global blogosphere(700WORD)
Evaluate a blog written from one of the following positions:

• Someone blogging in English about some aspects of day-to-day life in a non-English speaking country, as a resident of that country

• A Western not-for-profit organisation working in a non-Western country

• A traveller blogging (in English) about their travels to countries outside the US and Europe

In your evaluation, consider the following points.

Does the blogger mention any difficulties with access (technological, financial or otherwise?) to online resources?

Are any language issues mentioned? How does the blogger seem to regard these?

If your blog is part of a journalistic or media organisation, comment on how it seems to be positioned – does it seem mainstream, part of the authorities of the country? Or does it seem more marginal, questioning the powerful? Explain your response.

Does the blogger comment on a sense of geographic and/or virtual community?

If it’s been written by an individual, consider how it engages with the issues of lifestyle we have been examining in the past two weeks’ classes. Does it seem to be about self-expression, displaying cultural capital, or curating/collecting knowledge and artefacts about particular topics?

Examine the use of what Eko (2010, discussed in the lecture) describes as ‘myths and narratives’ in the subject position of the blogger and their approach to their subject. Do they characterise themselves in terms of any of Eko’s myths? How do they represent the relationship between the location(s) they blog about, the world beyond, and themselves?

Somolu argues for the importance of blogging for African women as a way to make unheard voices heard: how is this similar to, or different from, the blog you are examining?

Blog Task 4: journalism and institutional blogging(700WORD)
Choose a media institution that specialises in news content and undertake an analysis of the blog-based content on its website, attending to the following points:

• To what extent does the site demonstrates ‘an ongoing “normalisation” of blogs, where the new technology is adopted but generally used in ways that more or less conform to pre-existing journalistic practices’ (Nielsen, 2012, p.964)?

• How does your chosen site compare to the ‘centralised’ and ‘integrated’ approaches discussed by Nielsen? How does that seem to relate to the mission and values publicly adopted by the media institution?

• Nielsen discusses ‘three key communities’ involved in the development of newspaper sites: journalists, managers and technologists, and their respective values, their views of their audience, and the privileges and drawbacks of their position (201, pp. 968-973). Examine your chosen site carefully and evaluate the presence of these sets of values and views of the audience at work.

• How does the audience for your chosen site seem to see itself, in relation to the views held by each of Nielsen’s communities (above)? Use Neilsen’s categories (values; view of people; strengths; weaknesses) to analyse the way a community of audience members for the site might seem to behave

Consider how rights vary across “time and space”. In other words which rights are chosen to be included in constitutions and how these rights are defined and interpreted vary across countries and across states in the United States at the same point in time (the space dimension) and vary at different points in time within the same country. As you compare the U.S Bill of Rights and the Florida Declaration of Rights, on the one hand, with the European Union Charter, look for example at how rights concerning religion are described. Likewise, can you detect any differences in provisions for capital punishment or gun rights. Can you locate the right to privacy in the U.S. Bill of Rights? Is it found in the Florida Constitution or in the EU Charter?  When you examine the European Charter on Human Rights do see any rights listed there that aren’t in Bill of Rights in the U.S. Constitution? Hint: Notice that the EU Charter contains a number of social and economic rights. Why would such rights be found in the EU Charter but not in the U.S. Constitution\’s Bill of Rights?  Give examples of what you discover and think about why these differences may exist. Keep in mind that these versions of \”rights\” were written at different points in history (the time dimension again). For example, the U.S. Bill of Rights were written in 1789 and ratified in 1791. The EU Charter evolved late in the 20th century. Does this time line tell us anything about how to think about rights? Lesson 2 also has a link to the Pennsylvania Constitution, in case you want to examine that document as well.
