Paper 2—Big Data in Action

Assignment Details
Word Count: 1250-1750

Thesis: Required

Whether in the form of genomes in the public domain or as content generated and shared through Facebook, big data provides scientists and engineers with the opportunity to understand what makes us human (and how we perform our humanity) with an empirical precision never before possible. But this same research often raises many privacy concerns. Whether accidental or intentional, exposure can and will continue to happen.

In this paper, I want you to offer a meaningful and evidence-based opinion about how free scientists should feel to use sensitive data in their research. To that end I need your paper to address the following three questions:
1. What kinds of big data should researchers feel free to use in the design of their studies?

2. What kinds of big data should researchers be able to use without permission?

3. What kinds of big data should researchers be able to use with informed consent?

I don’t have a right answer for these questions. I have beliefs and opinions, and some of these are informed; this paper is an opportunity for you to concretize some of your own opinions.

We will discuss and draft this paper over the next several class periods. To that end I will not assign additional readings during this time, but I will instead expect you to bring writing to class to work on this together. The writing may not all be directly incorporated into the paper you write, but it will hopefully all at least be informative
