American History

Twentieth Century U.S. History
Final examination
Book:Zinn, Howard. The Twentieth Century. A People\’s History. New York: Harper, 2005.
Please answer both of the following essays in one to two pages (250 to 500 words). Please do not focus in the first question solely on Rosa Parks which seems to be the most popular figure to students. And if you do mention her, please say more than she didn\’t get up and give her seat to a white person. There was so much more going on here, such as the role of the NAACP, the sections on the bus (not just white and Black, but a buffer zone in between where Blacks could sit unless a white person demanded they relinquish their seat. Also what became of her? Where did she end up living and doing? I really would like some thoughtful, reflective answers that show you took time to ponder all the many contributors. When Marion Barry, the first Black major of Washington, D.C., died, his role in the Civil Rights movement was mentioned in the words of the current mayor-elect, President Obama and others. For his his troubles, Barry left a legacy for being militant and faithful to the cause of integration. Please try to go beyond the objvious choices and fine unsung heroes.

1. What organizations, events or public policies do you think contributed the most to advance the Civil Rights movement from 1950 to 1990?

2. How have the wars of the twentieth, and now, twenty-first centuries shaped the lives of working class people in the United States?

IDENTIFICATIONS (IDs)

Please write a short definition (two or three sentences) of each of the following terms. After the definition, reflect on the term you have defined and write what you think the significance of the term is, that is, why was it important at the time and why is it important today (again, two or three sentences). You must include both parts, the definition and the significance/meaning, to get a complete grade. It is good to put the definition and the significance in two separate paragraphs so I know you covered both. You cannot get better than a C if you only have one part.

There are 25 terms and you must do them all. You will have to do some outside research to complete this assignment although many of them are included in Zinn.
