Evaluate a blog written from one of the following positions:
• Someone blogging in English about some aspects of day-to-day life in a non-English speaking country, as a resident of that country
• A Western not-for-profit organisation working in a non-Western country
• A traveller blogging (in English) about their travels to countries outside the US and Europe
In your evaluation, consider the following points.
Does the blogger mention any difficulties with access (technological, financial or otherwise?) to online resources?
Are any language issues mentioned? How does the blogger seem to regard these?
If your blog is part of a journalistic or media organisation, comment on how it seems to be positioned – does it seem mainstream, part of the authorities of the country? Or does it seem more marginal, questioning the powerful? Explain your response.
Does the blogger comment on a sense of geographic and/or virtual community?
If it’s been written by an individual, consider how it engages with the issues of lifestyle we have been examining in the past two weeks’ classes. Does it seem to be about self-expression, displaying cultural capital, or curating/collecting knowledge and artefacts about particular topics?
Examine the use of what Eko (2010, discussed in the lecture) describes as ‘myths and narratives’ in the subject position of the blogger and their approach to their subject. Do they characterise themselves in terms of any of Eko’s myths? How do they represent the relationship between the location(s) they blog about, the world beyond, and themselves?
Somolu argues for the importance of blogging for African women as a way to make unheard voices heard: how is this similar to, or different from, the blog you are examining?
Blog Task 4: journalism and institutional blogging(700WORD)
Choose a media institution that specialises in news content and undertake an analysis of the blog-based content on its website, attending to the following points:
• To what extent does the site demonstrates ‘an ongoing “normalisation” of blogs, where the new technology is adopted but generally used in ways that more or less conform to pre-existing journalistic practices’ (Nielsen, 2012, p.964)?
• How does your chosen site compare to the ‘centralised’ and ‘integrated’ approaches discussed by Nielsen? How does that seem to relate to the mission and values publicly adopted by the media institution?
• Nielsen discusses ‘three key communities’ involved in the development of newspaper sites: journalists, managers and technologists, and their respective values, their views of their audience, and the privileges and drawbacks of their position (201, pp. 968-973). Examine your chosen site carefully and evaluate the presence of these sets of values and views of the audience at work.
