PART I1. What does Stanley Milgram\’s \”Perils of Obedience\” have to tell us about efforts to standardize professional ethics? What does Milgram believe is the relationship between the obedience and individual morality? And how would Milgram evaluate Edward Snowden\’s decision to leak classified information about what he believed to be unconstitutional practices within the NSA?
2. Using MacIntyre\’s theoretical framework (that is, by reference to terms like \”internal goods,\” and \”external goods\”), explain why someone who loves the child depicted in MacIntyre\’s \”chess\” example might offer her some candy to play chess when she doesn\’t want to play? And why might one offer her twice as much candy if she plays well? Refer directly to the paragraph in \”The Nature of the Virtues\” where this is discussed, making sure to explain all its relevant aspects.3. Consider Seumas Miller\’s comments on Searle’s discussion of deontic powers:

How would Searle respond, do you think? Do you find anything objectionable in Miller\’s claims here? Explain clearly.

4. Should scientific institutions take account of social or political pressures in determining the best course of action in solving scientific problems? Can they avoid doing so? For instance, in discussing the medical community\’s desire for \”clean\” trials, Epstein writes that some treatment activists argued:          the defense of science put forward by mainstream researchers was an ideology designed to promote the kind of science they happened to do as the only kind that could be called science. (p. 423)

Is there merit in this charge?

5. According to Heinz Leugenbiehl, \”professional ethics cannot simply be the subject of abstract philosophical analysis. It needs to be looked at in the context of particular cultural domains.\” Explain why he believes this to be the case, using his case studies as the basis for your argument. And how, if at all, might this relate to MacIntyre\’s argument for the different definitions of virtue across the ages?
6.  On page 426 of Steven Epstein’s essay, in discussing Gieryn’s “boundary work” thesis he argues that the “recent reconfiguration of the boundaries (Gieryn 1983) between the “inside” and the “outside” of biomedicine has been the outcome of struggle.” Can the same be said for the “inside” and “outside” of engineering and its subfields?Your task here is to do an analysis of a moment of “struggle” over norms within engineering, and questions of relevant expertise. Examine the discourse around the official NIST investigation of the collapse WTC Building 7, and determine:

   1.    whether that investigation was conducted in a way that conformed to the norms of engineering-based investigations of this sort. Determine whether the investigation sought to, and did successfully, answer the relevant questions raised about the fate of the building, or whether legitimate questions remain; and

   2.    how organizations critical of the NIST narrative have fared in making a case for their own expertise as a basis for rejecting the official narrative (an example of such a group would be Architects & Engineers for 9/11 truth, www.ae911truth.org). In your view, is this an organization whose voice should be considered an expert one?Why or why not?

#1. The impact on the lives of woman had put a positive outlook during the time of the baby boom; it also had negative effects as well. With all of the babies being born, they had to keep up with baby products like food, clothing, toys, and baby items so production on these items had put the economy on top. On the negative side, a lot of people was getting worried because the population was growing dramatically, schools had to be built due to the overcrowding. These put a big strain on women and had to be mothers with big expectations of motherhood. Cooking and cleaning became the norm around the house and woman became housewives and staying home more often.#2. After World War II ended, there was an enormous amount of babies being born in the nation. A whopping \”4.3 billion births occurred, one every seven seconds\” (Shi and Tindall, 2015, pg. 978). This generation of children was known as the \”baby boom\” (Shi and Tindall, 2015, pg. 978). During the baby boom generation, women were treated very different from previous generations. Women were forced to give up their dreams and careers and focus on becoming a stay at home wife for their husbands and a mother for their children. Women who stayed at home also performed all the duties and chores in the home, some of which included, cooking and cleaning, doing laundry, and also raising and taking care of their children that she bear. Even though many women wanted to go out and work to make money for themselves, majority of them eventually had no choice and gave in, and instead stayed home and became housewives. Because back in those days, it was said that women belonged in the home rather than at work.

After Steve has had so many drinks that Bill knows (or should know) that Steve is very intoxicated, Steve says to Bill, \”I\’ll sell you my house for $100,000.\” Bill accepts. The fair market value of Steve\’s house is $100,000. Will Steve be able to avoid this transaction? Why or why not?Steve writes a letter to Bill one day saying, \”I will sell you my house for $100,000.\” Completely unbeknownst to Bill, at the time Steve wrote the letter he was utterly intoxicated. The fair market value for the house is $100,000. Will Steve have to sell his house to Bill? Why or why not?Mary, a longtime law professor, has been entering into quite a few contracts in recent months. One of those contracts was for the purchase of a riding lawn mower. Unbeknownst to the sales clerk who entered Mary into the contract, Mary is suffering from Alzheimer\’s, but has not been deemed incompetent by the state. On the day of delivery, the sales clerk delivers the lawn mower to Mary\’s apartment. Mary is surprised by the delivery of the mower and has no recollection of ordering it. The clerk shows her the contract. Is this contract voidable and why?

Comparative Critique

Choosing from the three shared essays, select one as your target. Using ideas, key terms, examples from the other two texts show your reader something new. Perhaps you might show us that while the target seems to be arguing one thing, it is actually arguing something else. Perhaps you might show us an unresolved contradiction in your target text—the author seems to have elements of their argument that contradict each other. Or maybe you show us a gap in the target’s argument—there is something they have not considered, and if they did, they would need to change their argument. There are many possibilities.

Please add extra information that you got from the article that I will upload that the other person does not have and are related to the question. Other people\’s discussion: (response to this discussion below while answering the question and also adding new information)\”             When Lincoln went into office he said he believed that this was an immoral institution as well as a politically backward and economically stunting institution. Lincoln and his party also believed that slavery needed to expand in order to survive. The way to eventually end slavery was to prevent it from spreading. In doing so, it made the South very angry. The discovery of bringing the slavery states back into the Union didn’t quite go as well as planned. The Emancipation of Proclamation was very bold and extended only to those slaves who were living in parts of the confederacy not yet occupied by the U.S. forces, excluding Louisiana, Tennessee as a whole. It did not apply to the slaves who were living in the four states that were in the Union. By the end of the Civil War, about 200,000 black men (about 80% were from the South) had served in either the Union Army or the Union Navy making this an enormous help in the military especially when volunteering decreased dramatically. The idea that the Republics are stable is not very widespread. The more powerful the motive is to desire to preserve the Union in order to preserve the Republican property.\”

In society, many people link abusing drugs or alcohol to an individual’s lack of personal responsibility or morality. Prior to American model Anna Nicole Smith\’s death, which was from an apparently accidental overdose of several prescription medications, her son, Daniel, had died just months before from an apparent drug overdose. This incident poses the question of whether the son inherited a vulnerability to addiction from his mother or was the habit picked up from living with her over the years. Post should be at least 400–450 words in length.
