These discussion boards have been designed to explore controversial philosophical topics. Some of the questions are designed to solicit very personal responses and opinions, and these debates have the potential to become heated. In the act of creating ideas, heat can be a good thing, but not at the expense of hurt feelings or frustration. Remember that the practical aspect pf philosophy asks us to examine and perhaps even change something about ourselves. Hopefully, we will be challenged by others with a different opinion, but we need to remember that a challenge to our beliefs is not a threat. To the contrary, it should be regarded as an opportunity to re-evaluate and understand why we hold these beliefs.Give some serious consideration to the topic or scenario before answering; and, then, using the questions below as a guide, write a 300 word initial response about the issue being discussed.Next, please take the time to respond to at least two of your classmates.

Unit V Article Review Community Policing Strategies

The findings from criminal justice research help us understand how theories and concepts can be applied to real-world phenomena. One way to make such applications is to review research, which explores one or more key concepts discussed in this unit. For this article review, you will need to locate a scholarly, peer-reviewed article in the CSU Online Library that examines the connection of community policing and CPTED (crime prevention through environmental design) to maintaining safe neighborhoods and the related challenges. Also, identify if any components of a Weed and Seed program are present. The article you use for this assignment should be no more than 10 years old. The article review will need to include the following components:  a brief discussion of the research study’s focus (e.g., purpose for conducting research, research questions and/or hypotheses, methodology); a brief summarization of the research study’s key findings (e.g., hypotheses were or were not supported; additional research is needed in a specific area); and a brief discussion of the applicability of the research study’s key findings to current and future practices in the field of criminal justice. You may use your direct experience, information from the textbook, and/or information from additional sources to complete this component of the article review. Each section of your article review must be clearly labeled using the following section headings: Research Focus, Research Findings, and Research Applications. Note: Each component of the article review should be in your own words. No more than 20% of your article review should be a direct quote. Thus, you will need to read the article and rewrite the study’s focus (component 1) and key findings (component 2) in your own words. You will have to use your intellectual creativity to brainstorm how the study’s key findings can be applied to practices in the field of criminal justice (component 3). Therefore, there should be very little need to use direct quotes in your article review. Your article review should be a minimum of one double-spaced page. Be sure to cite, in APA format, any source used to influence your response. Therefore, your reference list should at least include a citation of the article you used to prepare the article review.

Government

For the Unit 6 Assignment you will compose a 500 word essay based upon your observations of a political or governmental meeting, speech, gathering, or similar activity that concerns either civil rights or civil liberties. You will need to first identify an activity that you will be able to attend. Examples of relevant activities include political speeches, town/city council meetings, school board meetings, political rallies or protests, public forums, or any similar activity that include topics pertinent to either civil liberties or civil rights. If you have any questions regarding the viability of the activity that you have in mind, contact the instructor. Though it is not preferable, you may choose to view a recorded version of the activity (speeches, Congressional proceedings, political rallies, and similar events are often available online) if your schedule precludes you from attending a “live” event.Within a 500 Word essay please include:

Justice

Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau all end up with a version of the Social Contract, but Hobbes starts with a very threatening “state of nature” in which all men are at war against other men. Here is an updated version of Hobbes theory:Imagine you washed up on a deserted island, and after a few hours of exploring, you realize the only food on the island is a somewhat limited supply of coconuts. After a few days, another person washes up on the beach. Since you were not sure that there were enough coconut trees on the island to feed you for the rest of your life if no ship came to save you, both you and the new person immediately start gathering up as many coconuts as you can find, and you both carry your coconuts to opposite ends of the island.Unbeknownst to each other, both of you also start gathering rocks so you can defend yourselves if the other person tries to sneak over to steal your coconuts. Neither of you can sleep, because you both are afraid that the other will attack in the middle of the night. After a few days of not sleeping, you guys meet on the beach and both agree that there will be no night attacks. But, even in your exhaustion, you suspect that the other guy is lying and will not keep his word, because you were fully aware that you were lying since you needed his coconuts to survive.Another week passes, and the two of you crawl out on the beach—too tired from lack of sleep to walk. Again, you both swear emphatically that you will not bash in the other person’s head in the middle of the night and steal the other person’s coconuts. But, both of you are still lying. At the first chance for either of you, rocks will slam down on the other person’s head, and coconuts will be stolen.A few days later, a third guy washes up on the beach. In is surveying of the island, he has found both of you guys and requests a meeting. Clearly, you and the other guy are too exhausted to even protect the coconuts you have, but what else can you do?So, the third guy (let’s call him the Leviathan) tells you and the second guy that he will stay up at night and protect you from each other while you are both sleeping. But, it would cost you both two coconuts a week for him to do this. And, he also wanted all of the rocks.By now, the two of you are so tired that you both agree to the offer and immediately sleep for five days straight. Now refreshed, you and the second guy sit down and start planning on how you can grow more coconut trees and increase the amount of food on the island. With the Leviathan keeping the peace for the price of a couple of coconuts each week, the two of you can cooperate and work together rather than constantly be at war. And, with the arrival of the Leviathan (a.k.a., the government), you have entered into a Social Contract in which there can be laws, justice, protected personal property, and restful sleep. Of course, you have to keep feeding the Leviathan—the monster. One significant difference between Hobbes and other Social Contract theorists is that Hobbes thought it was alright to overthrow an unjust government or even kill an unjust monarch. If the Leviathan is eating all of your coconuts but the people are getting no benefits from the arrangement, it might be prudent to kill the monster. Not surprisingly, the British monarchy was unhappy with Hobbes’ theory.Developed a well-organized argumentative essay which addresses all of the following questions:Please ensure that your essay addresses each component of the assigned questions and that your answer is well-organized, uses excellent, college-level prose, and makes judicious use of textual evidence. Your essay must follow APA formatting and should be 450 words long.

In public speaking there are multiple elements that play a role in administering a well thought out speech.

This week is class we will begin discussing how to present your speeches. We will discuss facial expressions, gestures, vocal elements as well as several other elements that can greatly enhance a speech. For this week:1.In public speaking there are multiple elements that play a role in administering a well thought out speech. How you present yourself plays a huge factor. Visually if you are smiling and using happy facial expression then the audience will think that your speech is light hearted. However, if you have a stern look then they might assume the topic is more serious. Vocally it is important to make sure you are speaking loud enough for your entire audience to hear you, but that you aren\’t screaming at the front row. Gestures can also contribute to a successful speech. For example, when listing points hold a finger up for each point. This will grasp your audiences attention and also help you to eye contact with them. 2.Vocal elements- Vocal elements can greatly enhance the way you speak. The way you speak will either keep the audience engaged or turn them away. If you are speaking with a monotoned voice and looking very \”dead\”, this could make the audience bored and not interested. You can make it sound interesting just by the tone of your voice.  Facial expressions- The facial expression you make while giving a speech will also either keep the audience engaged for possibly turn them away. If you have a blank face with little or no facial expressions while you are giving a speech this could possible turn the audience away. Smiling and having fun with your speech will keep the people listening wanting to learn more.
